K B Sundarambal

Kodumudi Balambal Sundarambal's story is a of a bold, gutsy woman - a woman who is not a regular Carnatic music artiste yet became a cult figure - Her sheer music talent took her from nothing to being one of the richest theatre and Carnatic music artiste.

Kodumudi Kokilam was the unrivalled queen of theatre artists. Her sterling silver toned voice had a permanent impact over the audience - The impossible high pitch, clarity of lyrics brought life to melody! Sriram V's brilliant talk today captured the facets for her life..

When you listen to KBS, especially on Lord Muruga, an inherent awe and bhakti resonates - Only an expert musician can render these pieces of wonderful music so effortlessly. Even for a lay man who does not have knowledge of music, a glimpse of these magnificent high note brings an intimate connection with the Supreme being, and a bliss that shines within us!

Married to SG Kittapa for a very brief period of time, an active political activist during the Indian independence movement, the first film personality ever to enter a state legislature in India, an artiste who was paid Rs.1 lakh then in 1935 for a movie, ventured in to Carnatic music artiste later and had the guts to sing an all tamil kutcheri, received 2 national awards, was awarded the Padmashri in 1970 - she had many credits due to the "Vengala kural" and devotional fervor.

On her personal front, she was widowed at 25 yrs, wore a white saree and Vibuthi, accepted only elderly roles, refused to take medication when she was at her life's end and bequeathed everything to the Lord of Pazhani! An artiste extraordinaire..

Thanks to Sriram Venkatakrishnan for yet another awesome talk, and some more interesting videos which has some amazing footage.. Check out Part 1 and 2 also.
